How Hibernation Saves You Money
Understand the difference between stopped, hibernated, and frozen — and when each one is right.
SparkCloud has three "off" states for a resource. Picking the right one is the single biggest lever you have on cost.
Stopped
The container exists but isn't running. CPU and RAM bill is zero, but disk on the compute node is still allocated, so a small storage charge continues. Useful for quick on/off cycles where the wake time matters more than cost.
Hibernated
Disk is snapshotted and uploaded to cold storage; the compute node frees the disk entirely. Charge is zero while hibernated. Wake-up takes 5–30 seconds depending on snapshot size because the snapshot has to download.
Frozen
Set automatically when your credit balance hits zero. Same cost profile as hibernated. The moment you top up, frozen services unfreeze automatically.
